Frequently Asked Questions: 50hr Psoas Retreat

1. Why Costa Rica?

Costa Rica, which literally means “rich coast,” is a small country in Central America known for its natural beauty. It offers rainforests, pristine sandy beaches, waterfalls, and a diversity of plant & animal life. Perhaps the most compelling quality is the country’s policy of peace. Costa Rica has no military and is Latin America’s longest-running democracy. Costa Ricans have a reputation for being friendly, relaxed and welcoming to visitors.

2. Where is Blue Spirit and what is it like?

Blue Spirit is on the Nicoya Peninsula, near the town of Nosara where Tamika has been visiting, teaching and training for the past 15 years. Blue Spirit is located in one of the world’s Blue Zones© which inspired the name Blue Spirit. According to author Dan Buettner, the Nicoya Peninsula is one of five Blue Zone’s in the world: a Blue Zone is an area where people live the longest and report the highest levels of well-being. While visiting Blue Spirit, you will feel the resonance of a vibrant, inspiring, and healing energy, because of the rich subtropical environment, and the cultural lifestyle.

3. What style of yoga is offered on this trip? Is it suitable for beginners?

This retreat is suitable for absolute beginners, as well as longtime yoga practitioners. Brenda and Carolyn are Cross DisciplinaryTM yoga instructors. Cross-Disciplinary Yoga is an inclusive system that allows, and even encourages, students to make modifications to suit their personal style and intensity level. Cross-D yoga is based on the core value of student self-determination; you are both skilfully guided, and personally empowered in your own practice. Our psoas explorations include cumulative restoration experiences, simple movement inquiries, and user-friendly psoas & core anatomy practices. Participants who are yoga instructors or plan to become yoga instructors in the future can use this experience toward their 500-hr level certification with DevaTree School of Yoga. See FAQ #6 on this form.

Please note: This retreat does not offer fast vinyasa flow or power yoga, and is not suitable for people who wish to “push themselves harder.” Asana classes do include strengthening, toning, and opening, but are on the gentle to moderate level of vigor. The “work” of healing the psoas involves slowing down, sensing, feeling, and allowing. We offer a progressive, systematic, and safe way to achieve this deep in the core of the body.

5. What is the schedule like? How much free time will I have?

The schedule includes early morning classes to help you awaken gently with the day, later morning to early afternoon sessions, as well as some evening events. We have designed the schedule so that each afternoon includes ample free time, and one day is largely open for beach-time, reflection or a day-trip, depending on your interests. Everything on the schedule is optional.

For participants who are using this retreat toward credit for their 500-hr yoga certification, we ask that you attend all of the instructional experiences. You will be asked to journal some of your experiences, and will also be provided with an e-manual so that you can continue practicing some of the techniques you learned. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to apply this to your 500-hr certification.

6. What can I do with my free time?

Blue Spirit offers many wonderful opportunities on the premises. For ocean-lovers, Blue Spirit is located on one of the most spectacular beaches in the area; swimming, walking or exploring the tidepools, rocks and treasures at pink beach make it easy to uncover your inner mermaid/merman! The Blue Spirit spa offers a full range of massage and therapeutic services. You can also partake of free Salsa dancing lessons, swim in the Saltwater Infinity Pool, or join a fire ritual on the beach. If you would like to adventure further from the retreat centre, options include surfing lessons, horseback riding, river kayak expeditions, canopy tours, birdwatching boat tours, guided waterfall hiking tours, and stand up paddle surf lessons. The staff at Blue Spirit is available to help with booking your excursion.

11. What is the average cost of flights to CR?

Flight cost depends on the carrier, the routing, the number of stopovers and when the flight is booked. If you have frequent flyer miles, you may consider offsetting part or all of the cost of the journey with your points. Booking as far in advance as possible is recommended.

12. How can I make flight arrangements?

Once you have received confirmation by phone or email that there is space open in the retreat, please feel free to either use your own travel agent, or contact us at info@devatree.com for recommendations about booking your flight. There are two international airports in Costa Rica: San Jose and Liberia. We recommend booking your flight so that you arrive in Liberia on the afternoon of December 22. Group shuttles from Liberia airport are available on Saturdays between 12pm and 4pm, and between 8pm and 9:30pm and can be booked through the Blue Spirit website. If you are arriving on a different date, or outside of the times when the shuttle bus operates, you can also arrange individual transport through the Blue Spirit website. Individual transport can be arranged from Liberia, San Jose, or Nosara airports. For those flying into San Jose airport, some itineraries may require you to arrive one day early and leave one day later in order to arrange a connecting domestic flight or ground transportation to/from Nosara.

13. Will everyone fly together?

Since there will be departures from various places around the world, and individuals have preferences about the airlines they use, each person will book his or her own flight. If you are traveling on your own and prefer to fly with another retreat participant, it is sometimes possible to connect people with one another so let us know if this is your desire.

14. How do I make contact with home?

There is a telephone for use for the guests for local and international calls. Phone cards can be purchased at the front desk. Wireless internet is also available at no cost and can be accessed via personal laptop. Each accommodation has a safe that fits a 17” lap- top computer. There is also a public access computer available free of charge to guests inside the lobby. There is cell phone service on the premises that supports local Costa Rica cell phones and international phones.

15. What is the time difference between home & Costa Rica?

To check the time difference from your part of the world, check www.timezoneconverter.com. Costa Rica is listed as “America/Costa Rica”

16. What type of currency should I bring?

The colone is the local currency, and you can either bring colones or U.S. dollars, as they are accepted almost everywhere. There is often a charge for using traveler’s cheques in Nosara. Local businesses also pass on the fee charged by CR banks for using credit cards.

17. How much spending money is required?

If you wish to take optional day trips, buy gifts, have a massage or involve yourself in local activities, these are at your own expense. It is also entirely possible to have a beautiful time without purchasing these extras. You will need $29.00 USD for the airport departure tax when you leave CR, and money for meals that are not included in your package. Gratuities are not included. Nosara now has an ATM, however it only accepts Visa and you must know your P.I.N. code. Many travelers find it most convenient to bring spending money with them.

18. What should I pack?

Yoga mat, sunblock, comfortable lightweight clothing suitable for movement, sunglasses, sunhat, water bottle, flashlight, hand towel, beach towel (sarong is easier to travel with), bathing suit, camera, travel-alarm, journal & pen, and comfortable walking shoes/sandals are very important.

19. What is required to hold my space?

A non-refundable program deposit of $600 USD is required to reserve your spot. This is to be accompanied by the Retreat Registration form. Please pay deposit by interac e-transfer, credit card or Cheque payable to DevaTree Inc. The balance of the retreat cost, your travel package, is due October 17, 2018 and paid directly to Blue Spirit via money order or wire transfer to Blue Spirit. Details on how to make this payment will be available once you are registered.

20. What is your cancellation policy?

The $600 program deposit is non-refundable. In the event of a cancellation, the balance of the retreat cost is refundable if cancellation occurs 30 days or more prior to the start date of the retreat, minus a 10% administration fee. For cancellations made 29 days or less prior to the start date of the retreat, the balance is non-refundable. In the unlikely event that the facilitators do not run this program, your deposit and balance is 100% refundable.

We are responsible business owners and have purchased insurance and have facilities which are reputable and insured.
