Frequently Asked Questions: 50hr Meditation Retreat

1. Why Salt Spring Island?

Salt Spring is part of Canada’s Southern Gulf Islands and our most tropical locale. Whether you dream of hiking amidst majestic trees, soaking up the peace-loving vibe, or finding a cozy nook to read in solitude, you’ll find your rhythm here. As Tamika’s guest, you’ll discover island treasures (within and without) that will nourish and renew your heart. If you can pry yourself away from our little piece of heaven, the island promises to capture your imagination. You’ll quickly understand why so many artists, actors, entertainers and free-thinkers land here—the creative spirit is like nothing else in Canada.

2. How much yoga and meditation experience do I need to take this training?

This training is suitable for all levels—no yoga or meditation experience required. If you are a graduate of a 200-hour teacher training, these hours can be applied to your 300/500-hour advanced-level certification. This training is also suitable for those wishing to deepen their personal practice.

3. What style of yoga is offered? Is it suitable for beginners?

This training/retreat is suitable for absolute beginners, as well as long-time yoga practitioners. Tamika and Carolyn are Cross-Disciplinary yoga™ instructors. Cross- Disciplinary Yoga is an inclusive system that supports students to modify their practices to suit their personal style and intensity level. Cross-D yoga is based on the core value of student self-determination; you will be skilfully guided, and personally empowered in your practice. Our earth based flows and therapeutic sequences focus on supporting the spine, hips, neck, ankles and feet to prepare the body for seated meditation. Participants who are yoga instructors or plan to become yoga instructors in the future can use this experience toward their 300/500-hr level certification with DevaTree School of Yoga. See FAQ #5 on this form.

Please note: This training/retreat does not offer fast vinyasa flow or power yoga, and is not suitable for people who wish to “push themselves harder.” Asana classes do include strengthening, toning, and opening, but are on the gentle to moderate level of vigor.

4. How would you describe the accommodations?

DevaTree Place is a spacious home and studio located in Vesuvius, the sunnier part of Salt Spring Island. DevaTree Place overlooks St. Mary’s Lake and the mountains on Vancouver Island. The house is a quick drive to the main town of Ganges, the ocean, or to Channel Ridge, a well-marked trail system that offers long or short hikes among the tall trees with stunning views. Guests can also walk to the lovely and puppy-filled Duck Creek Pond trail from the retreat house. The retreat property also has a small private wooded trail. Rooms are 2-share with one 3-share when the program is full.

5. What is the schedule like? How much free time will I have?

The schedule includes morning classes to help you awaken gently with the day, later morning to early afternoon sessions, as well as some evening classes. We have designed the schedule so that each afternoon includes free time, and one day is largely open for reflection or a day-trip, depending on your interests. Everything on the schedule is optional.

For participants who are using this training toward credit for their 300/500-hr yoga certification, we ask that you attend all of the instructional experiences. You will be asked to journal some of your experiences, and will also be provided with an e-manual so you can practice and/or teach the techniques you learned. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to apply this to your 300/500-hr certification.
